Did you read the headline? I won the Nu. 2 million Bhutan Lottery jackpot last week – Nu.1.6 million after a 20% tax.

But, let us get to this: Is it a lot of money? It would be nothing for people like Jeff Bezos, Elon Musk or Gautam Adani.

Goop Sonam Drukpa. He would be throwing away that much as a tipping to a beautiful hotel waitress.

But we are neither Jeff Bezos nor Gautam Adani, or Goop Sonam Drukpa for that matter. So, Nu.1.6 million is a lot of money.

It would take more than 3 years to reach this Nu.1.6 million even if I save 100% of my current salary. Lama Khenno. Impossible.

Story of lottery winner in Bhutan

My current savings should be in the bank for more than 25 years to earn that much interest. I might as well won’t be that long in this world.

The point I am trying to make; Nu.1.6 million is a lot of money for people like you and me – common Bhutanese.

But I also know human psychological principle that underlines as to why lottery winners go broke faster than others.

I will be careful not to fall in that category of lottery winners. Some of my plans for this Nu.1.6 million windfall are:

#1 Contributions Machine

I always wish to write a cheque of Nu. one million to one of the charitable organizations in Bhutan which is into a cause closest to my heart.

However, I don’t want to donate the entire sum. Instead I want to create a separate safe investment of Nu. 1 million and then donate all its interest every month.

When the donated amount reaches Nu.1 million, I would donate the entire principal in a Nu.1 million cheque.

#2 Long-term Investment

If I put Nu. 1M for the donation machine, I am left with Nu. 6 lakhs. Out of this, I want to put Nu. 3 lakhs in long-term investment.

Since more than 80% holdings in my investment portfolio is for long-term, this Nu.3 lakhs would be a new capital injection.

#3 Speculative Investment

I also want to trade actively in Bhutan Stock Market taking advantage of frequent price fluctuations.

Though this is a high-degree risk activity, this time I can afford to get into it and experience myself.

This will be done continuously for a year. If it’s good, I will keep on doing and if not I will stop it for other speculative investment opportunities.

Lottery in Bhutan speculation

In this exercise, I might lose Nu. 2 lakhs and experience active trading or not lose Nu.2 lakhs but still experience the trading.

If worst comes to worst, I might lose the money though I will try my best not to, the amount lost won’t impact my overall portfolio.

#4 Family Getaway Budget

Nobody knows about this windfall except few Bhutan lottery staff. I also don’t want to tell about it to a single soul.

However, I shall share its benefits with my family though they will be kept unaware about it for at least 2-3 years.

We have Panbang and Jigmechu in our list. I also want to take them on a staycation at Tigernest Camp. I kept 1 lakh for the travel plans.

These are some things I would like to do if I really win the jackpot. What about you? Happy April Fool Day!
